The Singles 81→85 comprises of all the singles Depeche Mode released between 1981 and 1985. It was re-released in 1998 after being remastered.
The photograph was noted for its artistic merit, being displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
The compilation wasn’t released in North America, likely due to their lack of success thus far on the continent. They began to turn this around with a tour in 1984, and the re-release of this compilation in 1998 reflected that, earning US and Canadian distribution.
The compilation was successful in Europe, and went Gold in Germany. It also featured the new tracks “Shake The Disease” and “It’s Called A Heart.”
