Billy Lockett About
Billy Lockett is a British singer-songwriter from Northampton, best known for his infectious pop ballads.
Lockett started playing the piano at age 8 and has had no lessons. He started a band at age 15 and continued playing in a dingy little pub. He cites Radiohead and Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi as influences.
By 2014, Lockett was earning a name for himself, supporting Lana Del Ray, Birdy and KT Tunstall. It was during this time that his father passed away. Lockett said in an interview with Telegraph UK,
When my dad passed away, I stopped really caring about doing anything for the wrong reasons and thought, “Do I actually like the songs I’ve written?” and I didn’t. I thought “Why don’t I write songs that I love that will just sell themselves?”
A song used to take me a day, now it takes me two or three months. There’s a craft to it which I didn’t have before.
For the next two years, Lockett wrote songs in the basement with only his piano and his producer Phil Clark for company.
Lockett released his debut EP Burn It Down in 2016, which was championed by BBC Introducing and went on to amass an impressive 1.6 million streams on Spotify. In 2017, he released a live EP. His second studio recorded EP Reset released in November 2019. He released an instrumental album titled Together at Home in 2020.
